Step 1: Understand the Big Picture of College Costs

Before FAFSA, scholarships, or decisions, you need to understand how college pricing actually works.
Learn the difference between:

• Sticker price vs. real cost
  
• Need-based aid vs. merit aid and who gets it
  
• What the FAFSA does (and doesn’t do)

Step 2: Get Organized as the Support System

A lot of what your child needs will come from you. 

Parents often keep documents needed for completing financial aid or answering college application questions.

Find a place to keep and track:

• Schools your child is interested in
  
• Passwords and usernames in case anyone forgets
  
• Financial info (tax forms, bank statements, asset reports, etc.)
  
• Notes about next steps and supports

Step 4: Prepare for Financial Aid Without Panic

Waiting until FAFSA opens is where stress starts. You have to plan ahead of time to get your college finances right.

Use this checklist to help you plan smart:

Step 1: Understand How College Is Actually Paid For

Before comparing schools or stressing about FAFSA, you need clarity.
Learn:

Step 2: Get Your Numbers & Questions Organized

Understanding is step one. Organization is step two.
Write down:

FAFSA is a tool, a calculator if you will → not a strategy.
Understand:

• What the FAFSA provides

• How it fits into the bigger picture (A.K.A. your budget)

If the math is not mathing, it means it’s time to get serious about your money plan or to make a different choice.

Step 4: Apply Strategy When You’re Ready

Once you understand the system, you can then apply the strategy.
Compare your options intentionally, not emotionally. Start with these questions: How much money do you have? How much can you contribute? What happens if you don’t have enough? What’s the plan B?

Understand Your Finances

College is a MAJOR financial commitment. Know how much your tuition, housing, and meal plans are gonna cost you, and pay attention to your bill due date. Make a plan to pay your balance and practice budgeting to manage your money effectively.

Learn Basic Life Skills

Independence comes with responsibilities!!! Before riding off into the sunset, master essential life skills like cooking simple meals, doing your own laundry, and keeping your space clean (a cluttered room is a cluttered mind). Also, learn how to schedule your own appointments and learn to advocate for your needs.

Get Organized

Being organized is crucial for college success. Use a planner or digital calendar to keep track of important academic dates like move-in day, the first day of classes, and assignment deadlines. Good organization can help you stay on top of your studies and extracurricular activities.

Plan Your Packing

Packing for college can be overwhelming. Create a checklist of essentials you’ll need such as sheets, blankets, toiletries, electronics, and school supplies. Check what’s already provided in your dorm, plan with your new roommate to cut down on costs, and review your school’s rules about what you can and cannot bring.

Register for Classes Early

If you want a good first-semester schedule, then you need to get advised and registered quickly!!! Popular classes can fill up, so plan your schedule in advance. Review course options and prerequisites to ensure a balanced workload. This will help you stay on track for graduation.

Get to Know Your Professors Beforehand 

Check out Rate My Professors to get an idea of how your professors teach and what you need to do to be successful before adding them to your schedule. This can help you make decisions about the classes you plan to take and dodge any drama before-hand.

Get Familiar With Campus Resources

Colleges offer a variety of resources to support students, like the library, academic advising, career services, a health center, disability and accessibility supports, and counseling services. Make an effort to find these resources on campus so you know where to find help during challenging times.

Practice Your Communication Skills

Communication is KEY and a life skill you will need in college and beyond. Learn how to write professional emails to professors and staff, and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself when you need help or clarification.

Develop Good Study Habits

College is not like high school. You gotta study to retain information and test well. AI can’t help you with a live exam! Practice effective study techniques like reviewing your notes, time blocking, and mnemonic devices. Make sure to also create a distraction-free zone to stay focused.

Prepare Yourself Mentally and Emotionally 

Adjusting to college life can be overwhelming. Be prepared to be homesick, and possibly experience challenges with living independently and with people you don’t know. Try connecting with your new roommate or classmates before arriving to build a sense of community and support.

Take these steps and you’ll set yourself up for a successful and enjoyable college experience.

1. Understand the Full Cost of Attendance

Tuition is just the beginning. The real cost of college includes:

• Room and board (even if they live at home!)
• Meal plans or groceries
• Books, supplies, and tech
• Personal expenses, travel, and emergency costs

Every college publishes a “Cost of Attendance” (COA) on their financial aid page. Use that as your budgeting foundation, not the sticker tuition price alone.

2. Build a Budget to See Your Gap
Once you know the full cost and what aid you’ll receive, subtract:

• Grants + Scholarships
• Family savings or 529 plans
• Expected work income (if any)
  

Whatever’s left? That’s your college funding gap-and what you’ll need to cover before thinking about loans.

3. Understand What a Loan Really Is

Before signing anything, you should know:

• The difference between subsidized and unsubsidized loans
• How interest works and when it starts
• What monthly repayment looks like after graduation

Remember, borrowing is sometimes necessary but blind borrowing is a trap!

4. Search for Scholarships Early and Often

Don’t wait for senior year. Many scholarships are open to juniors, and even younger students. Start local:

• Employers (yours or your child’s)
• Credit unions and banks
• Community groups and churches
• School-based scholarships

Pro tip: Set a goal to apply to at least 3 scholarships per month.

5. Complete the FAFSA Even If You’re Not Sure You’ll Qualify

The FAFSA unlocks access to:

• Pell Grants (free money)
• State aid programs
• Work-study eligibility
• Federal student loans (which are safer than private loans)
• Institutional Scholarships

Middle-income families often qualify for some aid but you won’t know how much unless you file!!! So get er done when it’s time!

What’s a Financial Aid Appeal?

A financial aid appeal is a formal request you send (by email or phone) to a college asking them to reconsider and potentially increase your aid package. Maybe your family’s financial situation changed because of a lost job, accident, or a parent passing. Maybe you got a better offer from another school but you’d prefer to go there. Or maybe the original package just doesn’t reflect what you actually need or have. Whatever the case, you have the right to ask. And yes, schools do say yes. But only when it’s done the right way and at the right time.

Common Mistakes Students Make When Asking for More Aid:

Writing a vague or emotional requests with no documentation

Colleges need you to be clear, concise, and include evidence to support your claim.

Waiting too long to submit an appeal

The longer you wait, the harder it will be to get granted anything. The sooner you can ask, the better your chances.

Assuming they won’t get more, so they never ask

A closed mouth never gets fed. The school won’t know you have a bigger need if you don’t tell them.

Step 1⃣: Know What Matters to You

Before you start making your pros/cons lists, take a moment to think about what you really want in a college. Ask yourself:

• Location: Do you want to stay close to home, or are you ready for a new adventure?
• Size: Do you prefer a big university with tons of people or a small college with a tight-knit community? Do you want to be in a city, suburb, or remote area?
• Majors & Programs: What majors or programs are you interested in?
• Campus Vibes: What type of environment do you want to be in?
• Career Opportunities: What kind of internships would you like? What are your career goals?
• Cost & Financial Aid: How much can you realistically afford? What is the budget for your educational expenses?

Write down your top priorities so you can compare your options later!

Step 2⃣: Ask the Right Questions

When you visit or research colleges, don’t just go by the fancy brochures—dig deeper! Here are some important questions to ask:

Academics:

• What’s the student-to-faculty ratio?
• Are professors accessible outside of class?
• What’s the retention rate (how many students stay after freshman year)?’
• How do you help struggling students?

Financial Aid & Scholarships:

• What percentage of students get scholarships or financial aid?
• What’s the average student loan debt after graduation?
• Is there additional funding for students who need it (scholarships/grants)?

Campus Life & Support:

• What clubs, sports, or student organizations are available?
• What events do students typically look forward to?
• What support services exist for mental health, tutoring, or career planning?

Housing & Food:

• Are freshmen required to live on campus?
• What are the dorm arrangements? What amenities are included?
• How’s the food? (Because let’s be real, bad food can be a dealbreaker! )

Post-College Success:

• Does the career office help with job applications and internships?
• What companies does your college have partnerships with?

Step 3⃣: Narrow Down Your Choices

Try these strategies to categorize your schools:

• Make a Pros & Cons List: Write down what you love (or don’t love) about each school.
• Visit or Take Virtual Tours: Get a feel for the campus vibe and student life.
• Talk to Current Students: Find them on tours, via social media, or connect through college ambassador programs.

Trust Your Gut: If a college feels right, don’t ignore that instinct! (same if it feels wrong)

Step 4⃣: The Final Decision

Once you’ve done your research and weighed your options, it’s time to commit! Remember, no school is perfect, but the best choice is the one that fits your goals, lifestyle, and budget. If you ever feel unsure, remind yourself that college is what you make of it. You’ll be successful wherever you go as long as you stay proactive and engaged!

Try the following tips to help you stack that cash and avoid future student loan debt!

1⃣ Start Early & Stay Organized

The biggest mistake students make? Waiting until the last minute! Many scholarships open months (even years!) before college starts—so don’t sleep on them.

Things to do:

Set a goal to apply for at least one scholarship per week.
Use a tracker to keep track of deadlines.
Don’t ignore smaller scholarships! $500 here and $1,000 there add up fast!

2⃣ Make Your Applications Stand Out

Scholarship committees read tons of applications. What makes yours different?

Tailor your applications to fit each scholarship’s theme. Also, learn about their mission.
Show your personality—tell your story in a unique and compelling way. Dare to Stand Out!
Brag a little! Dropped the mic on a big school project? Led a club? Created an activity? Share it!

3⃣ Write a Bomb Essay (Without the Stress!)

Hate writing essays? Same. But here’s the trick: You can recycle essays you already have!

Write one strong essay and tweak it for multiple scholarships.
Use real stories from your life—scholarship judges love personal experiences.
Proofread, proofread, proofread! (Or ask ChatGPT, a friend, or a teacher for help!)

BONUS TIP: Many scholarships ask similar questions (like “Why do you want to go to college?” “What are your career goals?” “How will this scholarship help you?” or “Tell us about a challenge you overcame”). Write one solid answer for each, then adjust it slightly for each application!

4⃣ Find Scholarships That Fit YOU

Applying for random scholarships isn’t the move. Take a moment to think about all you come with like your goals, your identity, and your financial need to focus on the scholarships you’re more likely to win!

Look for local scholarships—they have a lot less competition.
Apply for niche scholarships (gender-based, first-gen, sports, hobbies, your future career).
Check sites like Scholarship America, JLV Scholarships, and Bold.org.

5⃣ Stay Consistent & Don’t Give Up

The secret to winning scholarships? Staying consistent and applying to a bunch of em. Even if you don’t win every time, the more you apply, the better your chances!

Set a goal: Apply for at least 5 scholarships by the end of this month!
Keep track of which ones you’ve applied for (we’ve got a tool for that).

Newsflash: The cost of education is rising! Are you ready to meet the cost???

Pay Less For College Strategy # 1: Apply for Scholarships and Grants 

There are plenty of options out there, and none of them require repayment. Search for opportunities through your state, intended college, local community organizations, corporate entities, and national scholarship databases. 

For Scholarships

Tailor your applications to each scholarship’s criteria and apply to as many as possible.

Check databases like bold.org and JLV scholarships for scholarship opportunities and keep your eye on my scholarship + list throughout the year as well.

For Grants

Apply through FAFSA for access to federal funds and check your state to see if you qualify for state grants and funding. 

Not sure what your state offers? 

Check the Nasfaa State Program Finder to see what other types of aid are available to you.

Pay Less For College Strategy # 2: Choose a Community College to complete General Education Courses 

Starting at a community college can be significantly less expensive than starting at a four-year institution. Their costs are much cheaper which will make it easier on your pockets and can help you save thousands of dollars in the long run. Start at a community college to complete all general education requirements, then transfer to a four-year college or university to finish up.

Pay Less For College Strategy # 3: Take CLEP Exams

CLEP exams allow students to obtain college credits for wayyy less money. There are tons of exam topics to choose from (34 to be exact) and the exams cost $95 + $25 (administrative fees). Check out the requirements for your major before choosing which exams to take, then check the CLEP school policy search to see which schools accept these tests.

Pay Less For College Strategy # 4: Attend an In-State Public University

Public universities often offer lower tuition rates as an incentive to keep residents in-state. The cost difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition can be substantial compared to other college choices so consider choosing a public state school to lower your college-related costs.

Pay Less For College Strategy #5: Stack AP/IB Credits in High School

Why pay college tuition for classes you could’ve knocked out in high school? That’s exactly what AP courses let you do.

Here’s the play: Take an AP class, sit for the exam in May ($98 per test but free if school pays), score a 3 or higher, and many colleges will hand you actual college credit for it. We’re talking skipping intro courses, getting ahead on your degree, or even graduating a whole semester early.

Some students walk onto campus already ahead of their classmates — just because they did the work in high school.

Before you sign up, check the AP Credit Policy Search to see how your target schools handle AP scores. Every school is different, so do your homework before you assume the credit will transfer.

Pay Less For College Strategy #6: Appeal Your Financial Aid Offer

Let me let you in on a little secret — that first financial aid offer? It’s a starting point, not the finish line. You have every right to push back, and schools are used to it.

Two situations where you should absolutely appeal:

You got a better offer from another school. If School A is offering you more money but your heart is set on School B — say something! Write a professional letter, attach that competing offer, and ask School B to match or come closer. It’s called a professional judgment appeal, and sis, it works more often than people think.

Your family’s situation changed. Job loss, major medical bills, a death in the family — these are real reasons to ask for a second look at your package. Don’t suffer in silence. Call the financial aid office, ask about the appeal process, and put it in writing.

A successful appeal can save you $1K–$10K per year. Multiply that by four years and you’re talking real money. The worst they can say is no — so why not ask?

Pay Less For College Strategy #7: Become a Resident Advisor (RA)

If you’re planning to live on campus, this is one of the smartest moves you can make — and most students sleep on it.

An RA (Resident Advisor) is a student leader who lives in the dorms and supports their floor or building community. Schools basically pay you to do it — not always in cash, but in something better:

• Free housing (yes, the whole room)
• Free or reduced meal plan at most schools
• Sometimes a small stipend too

The key thing to know: apply sophomore year — spots fill up fast and they’re not waiting on you!
